Oral Hygiene for Children
Maintain Healthy Oral Hygiene for Your Children
Most children have their first “baby” tooth erupting before they turn one year old. It is important to begin establishing proper oral hygiene habits at home to ensure happy, healthy primary and permanent teeth. Here are some aspects that can be followed to establish oral hygiene for your child.
- Before your child’s first tooth erupts, it is still important to clean his or her mouth daily. You can use a wet washcloth to cleanse your child’s gums and tongue daily. This can help avoid bad breath and the start of thrush (an oral fungus) in your child’s mouth.
- When the first baby tooth erupts, parents should brush their child’s teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a small smear of toothpaste. After the age of two years old, you can increase the size of toothpaste to a pea-sized amount. You should brush twice daily to help prevent dental decay.
- Avoid mouth rinses until your child is able to spit to avoid excess fluoride intake.
- Flossing is crucial in maintaining good oral health, but it can be tricky! Our team will discuss the proper way to floss with you and your child to help prevent decay between the teeth. It is recommended to floss at least once daily, preferably at bedtime.
- Take care to avoid sugary foods and drinks that are commonly linked to dental decay or cavities. Limiting exposure to these can greatly increase your child’s chances of staying cavity-free!
